NAME: Kirsty Welsh

OCCUPATION: Personal Trainer; Health, Wellness & Lifestyle Coach

Please tell us a little about your business, yourself and how you got to where you are now in the wellness industry…

I love my business and brand so, so much!! The further we travel together, the more we love each other! I run a self-branded personal training and health coaching business, which has evolved and grown as a direct reflection of my own health needs and therefore intimate passions. This is why I am my brand; everything I share with others is the foundation of what I live, breathe and love within myself.

The mind/body/spirit connection is what excites me more than anything and guiding others toward gaining greater body awareness on a holistic level. It's ridiculously cool to be part of the powerful inner transformation that occurs in an individual and/or collective as a result; thoughts, feelings and behavioural choices begin to shift, my clients start understanding themselves better, which empowers them to truly listen and act on what their bodies are telling them. I really believe that health determines our happiness, and who doesn't want to feel great, right? When we're radiating health from the inside out, amazing things just flow and happen and we don't have to waste previous energy worrying about silly things or aches and pains, stress and illness within our body. I'm grateful to have been attracted to studying a range of courses over time, not only traditional personal training and nutrition but also yoga, holistic lifestyle coaching, NLP, reiki energy healing and meditation. As a direct result of my own internal and external body health issues, I've developed a pretty cool relationship with my own body and therefore my own style of coaching, guiding others to discovering their own unique makeup and balance to create a gorgeous energy and passion for life and healthy living. I'm pretty damn determined to get out there, share and connect with others who are open to change and help make a humungo difference :)

What does ‘living naturally’ mean to you?

To me, 'living naturally' is living honestly; speaking and radiating our truths, from a place of authenticity. To live 'un-naturally' is to fight against nature, causing sickness and disease, where living naturally takes us to a place of greater health and happiness. I don't believe there is a single way to live naturally; I think our individual definition of the idea is constantly evolving as our own beliefs and mindsets shift, so it is really important to learn to listen to our body and trust our instincts.

What does a typical day in the wellness world look like for you?

The wellness world is definitely a unique and positive place! We are early risers to get the most out of the day! I'm normally up between 4.30-5am to get my breakie smoothie and hopefully motivating instagram post in before my first client for the day. Between my amazing clients there may be business meetings, blog and article writing, my own training session, public speaking events, brainstorming (the entrepreneur's favourite past-time), social media and website updates, marketing plans, general business admin and communication, and always always yoga and meditation or I definitely go a bit nutty!

What are your top 3 tips for staying fit and healthy?

  1. Meditation. This is a huge priority. No matter what style of meditation you try, it teaches mind control. It is a really challenging practice to begin with; most of us really struggle to sit still for long or have the patience to just breathe and be! It took me ages to really commit to regular practise! Once we're able to disconnect from the mental chatter, we're able to gain better body awareness and start to really understand ourselves and our needs. The simple act of conscious breathing is so vital for good health too; the flow of un-constricted breathing awakens all the cells of our body and each system (eg. muscular, endocrine) starts to wake up and communicate more effectively with each other. Meditation doesn't have to be about monks and chanting; it can be whatever you want it to be. No matter how it's practised, the health benefits are far too amazing to ignore.
  2. Move in 3D. Most of us really don't move in every plane of the body; we're a society that bends forward and moves from side to side but neglects twisting and integrating our core muscles into daily movement and training, and our body starts to lock up and lose proper function. Anyone who has done a dance or yoga class, where the body is taken through 3D stretching and strengthening movements, will feel incredible and alive afterwards. This is how we were designed to move, with freedom! A balanced exercise regime with 3D movement is crucial to good health and functional fitness.
  3. Eat living foods. This is simple; eat foods that provide energy to the body rather than deplete the body of energy. My personal preference is organic, but fresh produce is the key to nourishing ourselves. Even yummy treats can be made out of gorgeous raw foods like raw cacao, maca, coconut oil, foods that are chocka-block full of beautiful nutrients that give back to our body and taste sensational.

In a nutshell, what’s your food philosophy?

Food is our friend, not our enemy! It is there to be enjoyed, nourish us and provide us with energy to live beautiful lives. That's why I believe in preparing and eating living foods that nourish our body. Ultimately, learning to listen to our body gives us the gift of simply knowing what our body needs moment to moment.

What do you do to ‘reset’ the balance button when life gets a bit hectic?

When the candle is burning at both ends, I take a conscious break to re-energise my body with whatever it needs to bring me back to life. Being outdoors in nature is hugely healing. I like to starfish on my back under a tree, meditate, do yoga, go for a walk with my fave music in my ears, catch up with my besties, visit my family back in Adelaide, sing really seriously loud so the whole suburb can hear, get a massage or facial, take a hot bath with Epsom salts, yes these are a few of my favourite things!

We’re all about balance around here…What’s your biggest indulgence?

I love chocolate! Admittedly it's always raw dark organic chocolate so not even that naughty, but I just can't get enough of the stuff.. yummo!

What healthy snacks might we find on your desk or in your handbag?

Carrot and cucumber sticks, raw activated almonds, a banana or green apple, coconut water, yummy raw bliss balls.

Can you share with us your top two pieces of advice for people wanting to start a career in the wellness industry?

  1. Authenticity. Our industry is just a gorgeous pocket full of beautiful people to be amongst. The coolest thing is giving the gift of health education to others, so my advice would be to make sure that you really are deeply passionate about helping others, rather than just learning about wellness for your own health. There's nothing wrong with this, but ultimately a successful business is an authentic one.
  2. Build your foundations. It's easy to want to jump ahead, create projects and business adventures before we're really ready to do so. I think it's a common trait amongst the health and wellness community, with so much passion we just want to get out and take on the world! Just remember to take things slowly, do your due research and learning and take it one step at a time. You will always attract the clients who will benefit from your current skill level, so have confidence in yourself and keep learning every day.

Do you have a favourite affirmation or quote you remind yourself of when life throws you a few challenges?

My favourite quotes and affirmations are constantly changing based on whatever I'm working through at the time. I have a miniature white board in my room with whatever I need written on it until I feel it's time to refresh. Right now it says, 'I AM HAPPY, NOW' with a big love heart underneath :) I'm also LOVING Rumi quotes, my favourite is, 'You are not a drop in the ocean, you are the ocean in a drop.' How true this is :)

What are you goals for the coming year?

At the start of the year, I decided that 2014 would be the year of better health and balance in every possible way, and it's been pretty rad so far, thanks for asking :)
