A recent article by the Chiropractic Association of Australia highlights the fact that back pain is a very common occurence these days, with research from the Australian Medical Journal indicating that 80% of Australians will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives! If you’re a smoker the news is even worse…

A study* published in the journal ‘Spine’ found that smokers have more frequent episodes of back pain compared with non-smokers. The study highlights the fact that smoking negatively impacts on an individual’s ability to lead a healthy life by reducing oxygen to the body, which is needed for the maintenance of healthy ligaments and muscles.  These muscles hold the spine in place and are vitally important to maintaining spinal health, thus preventing back pain.

It is commonly known that smoking reduces lung function, and that healthy lungs are needed to allow for optimal breathing and optimal exercise potential.  As mentioned above, having a reduced lung capacity impacts on your spinal health and consequently less exercise causes weak muscles, weak body structures and an increase in spinal pain.

Through the expert advice that Renee Naturally provides and with chiropractic care, we can help promote positive spinal health, restore nervous system function, and provide guidance towards a healthier lifestyle. So, if you’re a smoker and suffer from lower back pain, this could be one of the many reasons for you to finally ’kick the habit’! Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2013.
