Chiropractic Care for Babies & Children

Many people ask me, can children can be adjusted and benefit from Chiropractic care? Here’s a little info as to why we can and do!...A child has many physical stresses to deal with during their growing years, and problems in children's spines can occur at almost any point in their development and growth.

One of the earliest challenges a growing spine faces is the position it is forced to adopt in utero. Many women will have heard of foetal positions which can cause problems with the labour i.e. breech, brow, transverse, posterior, but what is less well known is that these can also cause problems in the baby's spine as well, termed “subluxations”. These subluxated regions of the developing spine can result in a longer and often more difficult journey through the birth canal, which can compound these problems.

In this way, even natural birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and nervous system - not to mention interventions such as forceps, vonteuse suction or caesarean section which can cause a lot more stress. The cause of many newborn health complaints such as reflux, colic, breastfeeding difficulties, allergic reactions, sleep disturbances and chronic infections can often be traced to irritation to the nervous system caused by these spinal subluxations and cranial misalignments.

Since considerable spinal trauma can occur at, or prior to birth, many parents prefer to have their newborn's spine checked straight away. Many developmental milestones including learning to hold up the head, sitting upright, crawling and walking are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a chiropractor, not to mention the falls, playground bumps and bruises, sports injuries and heavy school bags they inevitably encounter in later years.

The majority of information our brains absorb for our lifetime is completed in the first two years of life! That’s why it’s so important to make sure the brain and nervous system is working as well as possible in these early years of life to better ensure ideal health and function in later years.

My son had a traumatic birth and my in laws suggested going to see a Chiropractor as he was screaming the house down 24/7! I was so worried about it (the idea of anyone clicking my boy's neck terrified me) but its the best parenting advice we've taken

Hi Casey. That's awesome that you gave it a shot, and as you would have seen now it is not painful for anyone get treatment, but can be so beneficial! x

What is the difference to seeing a cranial osteopath? I've read a bit about both recently but am confused which one is the best option for my boys! Thanks
