NAME: Amanda Clark

OCCUPATION: Owner and Trainer at She’s a Knockout, Mobile Personal Training for Women

Please tell us a little about your business, yourself and how you got to where you are now in the wellness industry…

From a young age I’ve been active and involved in team/individual sports.  Food was my number 2 love, so after a few chubby teen years I knew I needed to find a balance.  I started eating a healthier diet, which made me more energetic and able to enjoy my sporting activities even more.  In my early 20’s I fell in love with kickboxing.  It felt great to kick, punch and sweat out every emotion I was feeling – I felt so strong, fit and confident within myself.  I noticed however that I was one of very few women who attended this class given the environment (sweaty, smelly kickboxing gym full of large and slightly menacing-looking men).  I wanted other women to experience the amazing benefits I was getting from my training, but in an environment where they felt comfortable.  This drove me to become a qualified personal trainer and boxing instructor specialising in fitness for women and running ladies outdoor boxing groups.  The classes took off and we branched out into bootycamp (female only bootcamp), corporate group training and mobile personal training for women in their homes and local parks.  We now have a growing team of amazing female trainers motivating and encouraging women all over Perth to feel fitter, healthier and more confident.

What does ‘living naturally’ mean to you?

Living naturally to me means being aware of our environment, how we live and what we put in our bodies.  I try and stick to non-processed foods as much as possible, move my body often and make time each day to be outside and appreciate my surroundings.

What does a typical day in the wellness world look like for you?

My days start early with an energising run through the park to keep me feeling my best and are filled with massively rewarding client training sessions/group classes, responding to enquiries from new and existing clients, updating trainer schedules, arranging  training permits with councils, updating our website/social media, completing interviews and researching what’s going on in the industry.

What are your top 3 tips for staying fit and healthy?

  1. Exercise daily doing something you enjoy – whether it’s running in the park, walking with friends, playing a team sport or dancing in the lounge.
  2. Be aware of what you put in your body.  A balanced healthy diet (no smoking and easy on the alcohol) will have you looking and feeling vibrant.
  3. Surround yourself with positive influences – happiness is infectious so keep your social circle full of inspiring, healthy and happy influences.

In a nutshell, what’s your food philosophy?

Eat what makes you feel your best.   For me that’s fruits, veggies, oily fish, lean meats, nuts, seeds and low-fat dairy. Why eat foods that make you dehydrated and sugar-crash or feel bloated and sluggish from over-eating, when you can feel amazing eating a healthy balanced diet?

What do you do to ‘reset’ the balance button when life gets a bit hectic?

Yoga.  Particularly the meditation following the session.  Sometimes I forget to slow down and although I think I’m relaxed, I’ve actually got a thousand things running through my mind.  Yoga helps me focus on my breathing and allows me to be still in the moment.

We’re all about balance around here…What’s your biggest indulgence?

A day at the spa (massage, pedicure, facial – the works!) followed by a catch up with the girls over a glass of red wine.

What healthy snacks might we find on your desk or in your handbag?

Medjool dates, fruit, reduced fat cheese, avocado, homemade hummus and carrot sticks are my go-to snacks!

Can you share with us your top two pieces of advice for people wanting to start a career in the wellness industry?

  1. Love what you do.  If you love what you do you’ll continually educate yourself to become better at it.  People will be attracted to your attitude and passion and you’ll never be without clients.
  2. Find a mentor in your field and learn as much as you can.

Do you have a favourite affirmation or quote you remind yourself of when life throws you a few challenges?

If it was easy, everyone would do it.  This affirmation is all about recognising that if you want something you’ve got to work for it.  Sometimes it won’t all go to plan, but if you don’t try, you’ll never know, so keep going.

Thanks Amanda - we're so lucky to have you share your advice and inspiration with the Renée Naturally community! x
